This innovative collaboration between libraries, poets, and zoos is part of The Language of Conservation, a project designed to deepen public awareness of environmental issues through poetry. The partnership between poetry and science began as a successful program developed by Poets House and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) that incorporated poetry into wildlife exhibits at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. Through the Central Park Zoo project, WCS researchers discovered that the use of poetry installations made zoo visitors dramatically more aware of the impact humans have on ecosystems. (Read the overview and evaluation (PDF) for the Central Park Zoo project.)
A white paper including a bibliography/resource list; articles by poets in residence writing on the cannon of nature poetry; and ways to mediate the competing agendas of poets, librarians, scientists and zoo officials; as well as tip sheets on library programming, zoo installation design principals, and how to pick a poet for a place and evaluating your success are being developed for those wanting to learn more about the project and replicate the project in their location, and will be available at the ALA Annual Conference and as a downloadable PDF on the Poets House website by June.
