Bob James The Essential Collection Rar

On 23 April, Stone, battalion commander of the 2 PPCLI, had personally reconnoitred the Kapyong battlefield and the approaches to Hill 677, discerning which routes of assault the PVA could possibly choose. Stone then directed his Pioneer Platoon to widen and reconstruct a narrow, winding trail which ascended Hill 677 on the south slopes from the village of Tungmudae.[100] This provided Stone with an essential supply route and the ability to maneouvre twelve half-tracks carrying heavy machine guns and mortars up to the summit of Hill 677, which he then positioned adjacent to his battalion headquarters. These engineering assignments were completed just before major PVA forces arrived on the battlefield.

As darkness descended on 24 April, Burke, commanding officer of the 27th Commonwealth Brigade, decided not to utilize radio contacts with 2 PPCLI headquarters on the summit of Hill 677. Burke ordered a Douglas Dakota aircraft equipped with loudspeakers and personally flew over the 2 PPCLI positions on Hill 677.[109] He announced to the soldiers below that they were now on their own, cut off from any support and would have to fight the coming battle alone. He wished them good luck and encouraged them to fight bravely. He then flew back to Brigade HQ, amidst derisive response from the unsettled 2 PPCLI soldiers. Burke's brief appearance over the battlefield served to cause further apprehension among the Canadian ranks.[110] Many of the less experienced 2 PPCLI soldiers voiced a desire to run and abandon the position. Veteran war hero Tommy Prince played a central role in steadying and motivating the frightened men.[111] Stone and 2 PPCLI could no longer expect that 27th Brigade HQ forces would continue to engage the enemy or would assemble a relief column to break through the PVA stranglehold on the supply road at Tungmudae. Stone was never in any doubt as to the essential strategic significance of Hill 677 for the UN forces and he issued a straightforward order to his battalion, "No retreat, no surrender."[112][113]

Anyone familiar with this era of Columbia releases - and anyone who collects any sort of vinyl has to have at least one title in their collection - knows they are lightweight pressings whose sound quality is enjoyable even if it's not up to vintage jazz vinyl standards from the 1950s and 1960s. I picked this up over a decade ago for a mere $3, when I was on a quest to own all of Shaw's Columbia output on vinyl. That was well before the renewed interest in his work that we are beginning to see today (although I think he still remains criminally underrated), yet even now his Columbia LPs can usually be had for under $10 even in NM condition. You'll pay a bit more for his 1970s work for Contemporary and Muse (they are harder to come by), but these Columbia sessions are a cheap and easy way to add some stellar Woody Shaw to your collection.

The lineup of musicians is stellar, with Gary Bartz sitting in on the alto sax on two tracks (one of which, "What Is This Thing Called Love" is the highlight of the album for me) and Steve Turre laying down some exciting solos on the trombone. United also features my favorite pianist from the second-generation of modern jazz musicians in Mulgrew Miller, whose recordings as both a leader and sideman throughout the 1980s into the early-2000s is highly recommended for those unfamiliar with his work. This version of the Woody Shaw Quintet would stay together and record quite a few more records together after he was dropped from Columbia, including two underrated gems for the Elektra/Musician label, Master Of The Art and Night Music, that added Bobby Hutcherson to the group. Don't pass on either of those if you come across them, but as far as I'm concerned, anything and everything Woody Shaw played on is worth adding to your collection, I think he's just that damn good.

The RAAF contributed three flying units-No. 2 Squadron withCanberra bombers, which bombed enemy supply lines and also conductedclose air support; No. 9 Squadron with Iroquois helicopters that wereused as gunships and for battle area transports and medicalevacuations; and No. 35 Squadron, the enlarged and retitled TransportFlight Vietnam, with Caribou aircraft, which flew transport sortiesall over South Vietnam. In addition, several ground units essentialfor logistical support and for construction and maintenance ofairfields, such as No. 5 Airfield Construction Squadron, weredeployed. A small number of Australian pilots were also attached to USsquadrons, usually as forward air controllers.

So for anyone else wanting to make that leap of discovery, here is what I managed to narrow down (after much toing and froing with my shortlist) to be ten essential tracks that just might help you get started. 2ff7e9595c
